... what would it be??
As I've mentioned before, I'm moving to Japan in a couple months... I need ideas. For now, I'm torn between Cappuccino, AZ-1, Supra TT, R32 GTR or FD RX7, "Rdosut".... etc but what do you have in mind, what would be your favorite? What would YOU get for yourself... Give me some ideas, maybe stuff I have not thought about... Try to think about reliability too (yeah I know RX7... not the best for that lol) as this will be a new DD for me...
Go for it!
Here is a JDM over 10k$ for your time :)

A decent 1971 era Datsun Bluebird 510.

Already own one. Miata. 100% made in Japan and shipped over. BOOM!

Forester STI. Because ridiculous. Or if you want something fuel efficient....
HONDA BEAT-O DESU! (Honda Beat).
Mid engined kei roadster with a 3 cylinder NA motor with V-tec.

What is this almost-hatchback thing?? I love it like that... Who made it this way?

2003-ish Mazda Miata coupe, 147 or so made, JDM only.

that's not gonna be under $10k
![]() 06/21/2014 at 15:09 |

VERY nice indeed, but as far as the 10k$ mark is concerned, it's gonna be WAY over it :)

hum, they are nice indeed... But I was maybe looking for something more recent and maybe a bit sportier :)

Wait...under $10k...
Eh, I'd take one and paint it HK taxi livery

awd is wwd?
![]() 06/21/2014 at 15:35 |

oh I thought it was FWD :)
AWD is still not CWD though (Correct...wd lol)

This is something akin to a 323gtx which there are probably more of them over there then there are here as well

VG33 or VG30 engine swapped Datsun? :P
They're fast since they're so light.
![]() 06/21/2014 at 15:39 |

looks awesome indeed :) But where to find such a thing?
Not really planning on getting a garage right away nor do I plan on doing an engine swap right away all alone a month or two after I arrive :)
My wife would really freak out lol

You can get any Miata, then just buy a fastback conversion kit... could easily cost under 10k in most cases.
![]() 06/21/2014 at 15:50 |
|
Well, these did sell for $6,800, soooooooooo.
![]() 06/21/2014 at 15:58 |
|
Considering people with one probably aren't in the market to sell unless it's a full restoration you'd be hard pressed to find one.
I'd make the effort though since replacing the engine fixes it's biggest unreliable ailment. VG33 is actually an Nissan Pathfinder engine. (Good quality. Better than decent but worse than great.)
Looking at your list again... I'd say since you're in Japan go for the GT-R. Those get possessed here in the states. Then again would you be able to get a decent one?

This Toyota Mark II Twin Turbo
This Toyota Chaser Tourer V - $8,580

lol, while the Mark 2 is nice, the Chaser... meh... I'll have to transform into a country side wannabe yakusa first... Then I will be able to own one of these :D

FD. I see no other possibility.

Tempting indeed... But... daily driving what WILL end up being a mess to fix at some point... I don't know... I've never dealt with rotary engines before either...
![]() 06/21/2014 at 19:16 |
|
I'm not afraid of a little engine work. It could be fun to learn to rebuild a rotary. Maybe even add another rotor/section to it. I mess with much more complicated engines on a daily basis.
![]() 06/21/2014 at 19:21 |
|
Yeah I guess your screen name helps for that ;)
But while I'm somewhat "ok" at doing basic —> medium stuff on a car (changing the optispark on a corvette, or changing the clutch on that same corvette being the "biggest" jobs I've ever tackled...), I have yet to REALLY touch an engine. I know I'll have to go for it at some point, but not within my first year in Japan... Later on, maybe :)

Holy crap those are under 10k????
![]() 06/21/2014 at 22:18 |
|
I would probably go with R32 GTR. Because its forbidden fruit.
![]() 06/21/2014 at 22:31 |
|
If you're in Japan they are just barely under 10k for the 3 rotor. However, I think in many cases that is for one that does not come with the inspection.
![]() 06/21/2014 at 22:33 |
|
well, not anymore... 1989's are 25 year old now so it's ok for you guys to bring them back now ;)
![]() 06/21/2014 at 23:21 |
|
Upgrade the cooling system and the only major concern should be having to rebuild the motor every 60k. Just be aware that the rotor housings are usually only good for 1 to 2 rebuild before they have to be replaced.
![]() 06/21/2014 at 23:24 |
|
Completely speculating on price, as I have no idea what cars go for over there, but I would presume that a Nissan S15 Silvia could be had for $10k. The car is RWD, the SR20DET is solid, and the turbo is ball bearing IIRC.
![]() 06/21/2014 at 23:29 |
|
Or the front-mid engine, turbocharged Suzuki Cappuccino if you're into Kei cars..
![]() 06/22/2014 at 00:11 |
|
Really? Engine rebuild every 60k?? That's a bit terrible no?
![]() 06/22/2014 at 00:18 |
|
It's as reliable as the Renesis in the RX-8, but with considerably more power (albeit worse fuel economy and more emissions), so if you compare it to a two stroke motor, no. Rotary engines are reliable, albeit harder to rebuild.
But look at it this way - if you can afford a car that gets ~12 MPG with gas prices in Japan being $7 a gallon, a ~$3k engine overhaul twice a decade shouldn't be that big of a concern.
![]() 06/22/2014 at 00:32 |
|
Well, let's say that if I were to find a car with a recent rebuilt, why not... But my concern is about buying the car, then having to rebuild it within a couple months... I could test compression, but I doubt it will give me much infos on when it will let go no? That's my main concern... I'm used to Corvette or Mustang engines that keep going strong after 300.000km... So an engine rebuilt every 100k is rather insane for me lol :)
![]() 06/22/2014 at 14:44 |
|
You can't really compare the reliability of a traditional four-stroke piston engine, with every major manufacturer having engineering talent working to improve upon it, with the rotary engine, which only has a very small percentage of engineers (if any) at Mazda working on it.
And a compression test should help determine the current state of the car. Unlike a traditional four stroke engine, where you can have perfect compression but heavily worn bearings, etc., the only moving wear part is effectively the apex seal.
